I've just found searching for special characters has never worked fine (very old version doesn't identify special characters). Let's see where the problem is...

I don't think, that this is a searching issue. The search results are correct and on hover there is the correct link preview in the bottom of chrome. Only after choosing a result, the URL is scrambled like above...

I'm getting weird results while tracking the issue. When I add a product 'Piña' to a blank install and make a search for 'Piña' I'm not getting any results. I'll test another language to see what's happening.

Yes I see. It seems your server is stopping before too_may_redirects, right? because it repeats the redirect a few times and then stops before showing the error.

I also noticed it duplicates the weird search keywords on each redirect. Really weird!

I have a v1.0.8.16 install with usu in english, which changes the special characters to the upper glyphes even in the link preview, but shows the article. On usu switched off, the special characters are just slipping by...

I cannot reproduce it. If I change a product to i.e. "Shiny Red Apples brün" on a blank setup (1.0.8.16) and search for "brün" I don't get any search results ???

Yes I've tested it, but in my local setup it doesn't. There must be something different that causes the issue here but I can't imagine what.

I'll try an online setup and see if it happens there or not and once solved I'll keep with the addon debug; if I can't trust my server I can't locate the problem trustly.
