A lot of people are expecting open source to be paying developers with money rolling in from adds, thus making the open source software dependent on the users and their regular visits to the site - at least, I believe people are thinking so, as adds are usually what keeps things free.
I think most people would never expect a software like this one to be developed and maintained by volunteers - I mean, it's hard to Imagine anyone willing to throw that many hours into something without getting anything (or at least not anything near the worth of the work done) in return.
It is funny/sad how a lot of people seem to think that an open source cart like Phoenix should be focusing more on the shopowners than the developers who are the ones doing the work for free. I'm grateful that so skilled people have chosen to share their talents for free for the benefit of and to inspiration for so many others - Thank you!

It's not rocket science.
Either use a <BR> in HTML product pages (which I THINK the OP was trying) or nl2br() in the PHP.
I'm sure this is mentioned in the docs.
I've been doing this for years. Phoenix though is less forgiving of HTML errors. If you miss a close tag or make an error it really upsets the page rendering causing very strange pages, in 2.3.x the browser just ignored it and the page looked the same.
Even a total newb should be able to code basic HTML to that level. ( <BR>, <CENTER> div align etc).

Possibly he's saying the WYSIWYG should be core to cater for those that can't or won't bother to learn.
Takes all sorts.
