Hi, my gmail customers are not receiving emails sent by admin (order confirmation, email, newsletter, status updates, etc. as well as the extra order email) whereas the others do. The mails come back by Mail Delivery System with

"SMTP error from remote server for TEXT command, host: gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com (64.233.166.27) reason: 550-5.7.26 This message does not have authentication information or fails "

I do not understand the SMTP part as I do not have SMTP enabled (at any rate there is no way to configure SMTP, just set it to true). Everything seemed to work before so is there something in our phoenix email that Gmail no longer accepts?

Every email uses SMTP. The distinction that Phoenix has is between connecting to an SMTP server directly from PHP or calling a "sendmail" program to initiate the SMTP connection. This is done at the PHP level. Phoenix calls the PHP mail function either way. PHP configuration figures out what mail does. Generally Windows PHP is configured to use an SMTP server directly and Linux PHP is configured to use a sendmail program.

Which suggests that the SPF record for your domain does not include the web server from which you are sending. You need to modify your DNS so that your SPF record includes the web server. The link does with an "ip4" argument. You might be able to do this with an "a" argument or an "include" argument.

Note that all this configuration happens in DNS, not Phoenix. Some of it requires information from your web server (specifically the IP that it uses in its Return-path). Your host may be able to help you configure this.

If you want more help, you would need to post the full headers from a message. Preferably one that is not sending. Your host or your domain registrar may be able to give you more help with that.

You can read more about what Google considers to be an "authentication method" at https://support.google.com/mail/answer/ ... entication under "Make sure your messages are authenticated". Cliff notes version: SPF or DKIM (or both) as specified in DMARC. Note that this is separate from what is meant by SMTP authentication, which is a way of connecting to your local SMTP server.

SPF is depreciated in DNS, its now a TXT entry.

v=spf1 mx a ~all

As a TXT entry should be all you need but can vary.
You might also email your ISP to set a reverse DNS for your site.

Called my hoster and he did the modification to the DNS as I have no control over it so it works now. Thanks to all!
