Verpackungsgesetz - German Packaging Act. Do you sell into Germany?

German Packaging Act comes into force on 1st July.

You'll need to be LUCID registered, pay a fee and let them know *in advance* how much packaging per year (in kg) you'll be sending to german addresses.

In a nutshell, this new act is Germanys implementation of EU directive 94/62/EC.

What options do you have as a Business Seller ?

1. Sign up for LUCID registration.
Probably on the "packing_slip" or "invoice" you'd need to display your LUCID registration number.
That is simple enough using a Hook.

Or;

2. Don't send to DE.
Which may be an option for some sellers. If you just send 1 or 2 items into DE, why bother with the hassle and expense.

How to not send to DE;
For existing customers: Probably the best option is to redirect to checkout_shipping_address if the address chosen is DE, displaying some type of error message asking the customer to select an address outside DE.
To stop new customers in Germany: remove Germany from the list of countries.

There may be more options I have not thought of, so if anyone has any input, please reply.

What I am almost pretty sure of is that Phoenix doesn't need to do anything in core code to service Germany & German users.

I have already seen lots of posts/emails/PM from German users who (wrongly) state that Phoenix is "impossible to use" & "not fit for purpose" because Phoenix does not provide certain things that German shopowners need in core code.

My standard answer is;
If we cater to your needs, we need to cater to all countries needs - and that is never going to happen. The whole idea of Phoenix is to make it easily extendable to suit your own needs. Unfortunately, you have not yet opened your eyes to the possibilities that the flexibility of Phoenix provides you.

Something to think about is "this is an EU directive that Germany is at the forefront of".

This means that all the other EU members are likely to follow suit, sooner or later. Obviously, not selling into the whole of the EU...is potenially very much different than not selling into a singular country (should you decide that not selling into DE is the option that suits you).

Same in France already.
No need to display the number on the packaging.

Ohh darn no, Some govenrment has come up with something again.

Thanks for letting us know Gary. I had not read about this before.

I think s7e03 Brexit (minumum order amount) will do the job if you no longer wish to ship to DE ( like me, just a few orders per year).

Not sure if deleting DE from the shipping module will do the job.

If a shop has registered customers in Germany it's no option to just delete Germany from the country list, I have done something similar in the past but these accounts (profiles) got a strange behaviour.

No need to display the number on the packaging.
So I would have to register in France, but there is no government control in France?

Will there be control in Germany you think?
