Installing the new PayPal 2.0 module on 2.3.4 BS GOLD (php 5.6.4)

I understand that this forum is about Phoenix Cart, and that I should upgrade. However, this forum is the last remaining source of help for 2.3, so here I am.
This weekend our integration of the PayPal App 5.3.8 on 2.3.4 (php 5.6.4) stopped working entirely.
So I am left scrambling, trying to install something that will allow me to accept PayPal payments on our site.
I'm trying to install the PayPal 2.0 module, but it was written for php 7, so I have to modify it for php 5.6.4. Has anyone done the work already? Are php 5 files available anywhere?
Any tips on how to get back to business? Alternative modules?
I'm not good enough at php to do this by myself. I'm using ChatGPT to help me rewrite, but it's outputting some pretty funky stuff...

the PayPal App ... stopped working entirely
Do this by looking at your hosting error_log or by asking your host if you do not have access. Things can't just "stop working", there has to be a reason, and you need to find that reason.
Once you have that reason, you can work on a solution.
As an aside;
I'm not sure we want to support such old installations. Although "Gold" is a fore-runner of Phoenix, it's from 2015.
Your Gold is eventually going to combust due to hosts wanting to move to PHP7. I'm quite shocked there are hosts out there still allowing PHP5.

Thanks, yes we're painfully aware that we need to upgrade and it will be the very next step. But for now I need the biz back up and running.
My first thought was also to find out why the App stopped working. There's nothing in our logs but a -1 response from the server with a general failure message, and there's nothing in PayPal's log. PayPal may have pulled the plug on the old module this weekend, since they are pushing hard for the 2.0 module. It's also possible that PayPal stopped supporting their old API, but they didn't say anything about that.
I've tried to find out why, but it was taking longer than what I thought would take to install the new module.
Unfortunately, the installation proved a bit complicated because of the php situation.

You could try contacting John, who authors the PayPal app and see what, if any, options you might have.

I've tried converting the PayPal 2.0 to php 5.6.4 to extent of my knowledge (not much) and it still fails to install.
Is it difficult to convert 2.3.4 BS GOLD to php 7?

A quick search returns some posts from the old forums, and it sounds a bit involved with no clear guides to do it...

Good news!
I don't know what to look out for, but if you can complete orders, customers should be able to do the same, and that has to be the most important thing!
For when you decide to do the upgrade, this post (and the entire topic) might be useful:
viewtopic.php?p=11832#p11832
Also, this app exist:
app.php/addons/free_addon/oscommerce_to ... on_utility
And the certified developers:
app.php/developers
Would also be the right people to ask for paid for help. You can find the contacts to John
@BrockleyJohn there
