Upgrade V1.0.8.3 to current version V1.0.9.3

Hi Forum..
Your thoughts on the difficulty of upgrading. I still use V1.0.8.3 which works fine & does all I need, but have lately been considering the V1.0.9 series. Is there a (relatively) simple way I can do this & retain all the sales/customer data/etc by migrating the current data to the V1.0.9 series sql database ?

Addons (now including PayPal)and changes are a different issue I can address once the basic store is sorted.

Any ideas will be appreciated. (I have lots of spare time lol)

Cheers Wal

Since you have a lot of time :-) you can just do it version by version or use the Zipur addon

This may be a bit long. I have just updated from 1.0.7.11 to 1.9.0. I am not going to say it was easy, but it is achievable even for someone like me with no coding skills and very little time. My old store was working fine so didn't really need an update but the way phoenix is moving forward I thought it better to do something.

I created a test store using initially 1.0.8.21 and using the available pro addons slowly worked on recreating my old store. I had all the original modules that I had coded recoded which did cost a bit, but will be worth it in the end. Eventually I ended up with a test store very similar to my old current store, but with new code and updated features, new payment modules and so much more.

I then had to figure out a way to convert the database from old to current. I tried a few addons but they made no sense to me, but fortunately I was contacted in a post somewhere from @raiwa who has been keeping a list of database changes. A link to the file is available in the footer of his posts. I created a copy of the original database as the current site was still live, and changed the information in the two configure files to that of the new copied database. I then went through them all, one by one and at the end everything worked. There is not that many if the truth be known. Getting the test site up to the latest database completed final testing could begin.

Working evenings and in the small bit of free time I get it took a few months, if not longer., but the site went live last week and seems to be working well. There have been a few wrinkles to iron out, but nothing serious. The only downside was the cost of having some special code updated, or paying for modules that were once free, but that's understandable as coders also need to earn a living. I also had new ideas about modules that I would need and developers were very happy to help create them. Thanks must go to @burt for his help and assistance. @ecartz was so helpful on these forums answering silly questions I was asking. Most questions were relating to something that I did possibly 6 years ago. If you helped with a problem sorry if I haven't mentioned you.

If something goes wrong there are some very knowledgeable people here ready to offer different levels of help to get you back on track. There are free and paid for addons available for most things, and paying a little for a paid oddon will support and help developers keep thing progressing forward with this great software.

Last thing. If I can do it I would say anyone can.

Thank you Fiber & 14Steve14 .. Looks like I will investigate Zipur's addon and/or have a fun & laborious time with a step-by-step upgrade. I appreciate your help.
cheers, wal

That's very good, as 1.0.7.7 was released just about 4 years ago.
4 years is a lifetime in internet terms..

Did you have any particular problems in updating?
Any bottlenecks or anything hard to understand etc ?

The new code is much easier to understand. Even for someone who is not really a coder. I was able to rewrite some old apps to work with 1.0.9.5 but some difficult things are still waiting. Probably will ask some more questions here.
What I can say so far is that the new Shop looks much more modern and is so much faster than before. And it is worth to be a pro member ...
