Is there a way to adjust the size of the search input box? My store is version 1.0.8.4.

Yes, apply CSS to set the sizing.
Spend some time using browser Dev Tools to experiment to achieve what you want before applying.
@media queries could also be used with the CSS to change the size according to viewport.

Updated for v1.1.0.0.
v1.1.0.0 already has a navbar search, but this addon is different enough that some users might prefer this over the Core version. If you decide to use addon, you'd probably want to turn off the core navbar search, as you don't need two search modules
