Session help with 1.0.8.20

Hi,
I am working on an up to date site in phoenix, but I am currently running 1.0.8.20 on my live site (I have decided to do a new site using current version rather than running applying each update as there are too many mods on my site to make this viable)
I have just been informed by my webhost that session cleanup is not working on my live site - I know it is a bit old but could anyone tell me how I would etiher fix my site so that session cleanups work automatically or walk me through how I would clean them up manually until I can get the new site running (apparently it is at 12GB right now)
