Decimal Places 1.0.8.0

We have the option to set the decimal places via configuration/MyStore by typing in 0.00 etc.
We also have the option within each currency to say how many decimal places by typing 2 etc.

Do we need this dual option and does one have precedence over the other ?

They do two different things. For currencies, it determines how much of the currency amount is displayed. E.g. $5.00 or 100 yen.

For Tax, it determines how the percentage is displayed. E.g. 7%, 7.0%, 7.00%, etc. It's not used with currency values.
