As an aside, tangentially related to 1088...would it be worth doing the version update as the very first commit each release. As time goes by and we get more users I suspect that some might download latest which reports as (eg) 1.0.9.10 when in fact they may very well be on almost 1.0.9.11.
If we did the version update as the first commit, we would know for absolute sure that someone is ahead of the release schedule.
This is just a thought I had as of this moment. There may be a reason to do it last that you use. The reason I historically did it last thing was to tie up all the loose ends and getting the linkback in the osc website (which is now obviously null & void).
Thoughts ? I have no reason to change it (other than above).

Sorry if I misunderstood of what you were implying dear. Just a thought how about for we name the release of our major cart versions that are having no bugs to follow as PhoenixCart Alpha ....next major release as PhoenixCart 2.0 (rather than 1.0.x.x) , It shall look very neat and cool too!
We keep the interim releases as a secondary option for those who would like to develop further along the way as they come.

I don't have a strong opinion on this one way or the other. Reasons why I do it last:
1. Inertia. You were doing it last and I kept doing it that way.
2. It's a little bit easier to be sure of doing it if I do it last, as I have the release process scripted but not the new branch process.
Reasons to do it first:
1. We could stop advising people to ignore that the new version has the old version number.
2. It's a little more obvious when people are on the new, in-development version.
So if I remember to do it first next time, we can do that. If I forget or come up with some better reason not before then, then we'll be stuck doing it last.

I'm not crazy about the practice of every release being a major release. I don't think that any of the current changes scream 2.0 to people using it. I'd rather save 2.0 for something more visible to end users.
I've been considering what might need to be in a 1.1.0.0 release. I would prefer that to a 1.0.10.0 release, and we're getting to a good time for it. 1.0.9.* might be a short bugfix series to finish digesting the 1.0.8.* changes. I'm already planning to remove the includes/functions files in 1.0.9.1 or 1.0.9.2.
