A blast from the past - and cudos to Gary

Post by Greasemonkey »

Short story.... with COVID, I've been stuck halfway between Frozen and Phoenix for about 15 months - however now my life is starting to get back to normal I've got some free time to again start working on my store.

So, I was trying to solve a small problem this morning and ended on the OsC forum and this got me to thinking.... what happened at OsC. I spent a few minutes reading about "v4" that (again) seems to be going no where and ended up Googling around and coming across this blog post from Harald.

https://medium.com/@haraldpdl/thank-you-62b5a49f12d3

As, someone who started in eCommerce with OsC in 2009 and who spent countless hours on the OsC forums, reading, learning and occasionally contributing my 2 cents, this answered many questions for me - and I'm happy to see recognition for @burt in moving this project forward in the way, I think, this Open Source project was originally intended.

Thank you Gary, and all who have help Gary move this project forward.

I consider Harald a friend, we've had our ups and downs but over the years we've worked well together. There is a long back story to the changes over at osC and hopefully at some point that story will come out into the open....

What we're trying to do at this forum/project is keep the essence of osCommerce (ie truly Open Source Commerce) alive and kicking. All of the Phoenix code is open and available and as H rightly says in his goodbye;
Open Source is like a recipe — if you don’t like how it tastes, add your own ingredients and share that new improved recipe with the world.

And that "we" means not only the ones who maintain Phoenix (and this site), but also Cert Devs and those 100 or so shopowners, like yourself, who supported my efforts over the last 6 years of the Community Editions and continue to support the Phoenix now we've been forced to break links with osCommerce.

Thank You to All.

On a more personal note, many of you know I'm not online very much at the moment. I hope to be back by the end of the summer, recharged and ready to go. In the meantime I know Phoenix is in good hands.

A well deserved break I’m sure @burt.

As one of those (in the “Team) who stuck around, it must have been strange/frustrating (you choose the adjective) to watch the slow motion undoing at OsC. The “what could have been” must have been paralyzingly.

I was still very new when v3 was dying, but I remember the excitement when v2.4 was announced. And the frustration watching it die, all in 6 months.

Congrats and thank you again, for pushing forward - you saved 100’s of us from a life of being nickel and dimed to death at Shopify.
