I think a good idea would be to merge the functionalities of the Out of Stock button, Product notification and a preorder feature.

You can view but can not buy but be notified when it's available.

It may go like this:

1. Update the Upcoming Products module to show products with image and clickable name only. You can maybe employ something similar to @heatherbell's Ribbon addon here. Just in case a visitor performs a search and an upcoming product is displayed in the results.

2. Visitor goes to the product page to be presented with a box in place of buy button stating "{{Product Name}} will be available on December 31, 2024. If you would like to be notified when this product becomes available, submit your email below". OR you could include in that box a preorder button.

3. Then after the preset date arrives, the buy button replaces the Notification box, the preorder button and the Upcoming banner goes away.

4. Then you have Queued Emails and Event Emails addons to keep the interested customers engaged. Maybe send an email days or 24 hours before the due date. @burt.

It's several ways to approach this. Something more simple than I proposed. I may have over complicated things.

Just ideas. I didn't have much time to think through the logic thoroughly. Maybe a developer can clear that up.

I was going to post that in the pro forum asking for new module ideas. You described it brilliantly.

I imagined in-line with you.

1 Preorder Products Page (Box Mod or Header Link) with register interest in expected product (Ie order without payment, stock 'no guarantee') , expected dates etc, input special (As pre-orders are usually discounted using existing specials system).

2 When stock is in, or being shipped to me(ie I know I have it g'teed), Ready payments, notify customer of availability by email with final date for payment.

3 Close pre-order payments at At final date and remove special. Remaining stock should become available at full price but not be available to be purchased until the release date.

4 A notify in admin dashboard to release/post.

(I'm suggesting a store notification system for 'store events' (For Plugin Authors) in the Pro Forum
And along with a link to this thread as a suggestion of what could be.

They are great ideas guys.
Now is your chance to make it so.

1. Work together and come up with a solid proposal between you (flowchart etc)
2. Prior to agreeing cost/timeline with a developer, ask if they would be happy to offer it for consideration as core code.
3. If developer is happy to do so, all systems go.
