I think phpBB has the possibility to have the browser open a new tab as soon as a link is clicked.
It is standard for users to control that behaviour.
If user wants new tab or window, get used to center click (mouse wheel) or right click->open...
I personally think that it is an assumption to say this, who is anyone to decide what is normal or standard?
We all have our way of browsing the web - I personally prefer to have a link open in the same tab - if I want a link to open in a new tab then Ill hold command down while clicking on the link.
However with a store, when you want someone to buy your product, regardless of whether the link opens in a new tab, window or the same page the only link on that page should be the one that takes you back to the original page and closes the tab or window you've just seen - after all the object of a store is to sell not to travel around the web
Current Store is now running 1.0.9.0 - php 8.2.18 Now working on taking a short rest - php 8.2.18

Well, in this case, there is the problem of the browser. The browser behavior is rather standard and outside our control.
If we put in something to make links automatically open in a new tab, then there is no way to open a link in the same tab (at least not by simply clicking; copy and paste will work). Because browsers do not offer a "Open in the same tab even if the link says to open in a new tab" menu option. Whereas every browser that I've used does offer a "Open in a new tab/window" option (or options, as some browsers allow both new tabs and new windows as separate options).
If you want to open all links in new tabs by default, consider one of the solutions at https://www.guidingtech.com/open-all-li ... bs-chrome/ -- there are probably similar recommendations for browsers other than Chrome.

You can do as you like on this forum but if you apply it to everyone else's store then the whole project is doomed!
The post and it's answer refer to phpbb and this forum, nothing to do with anyone's store or store-owners - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=340#p3158

According to the heading is about "Add View Gallery Button to Products Page" not about phpbb and this forum!

I don't think anyone is suggesting opening the Gallery in a separate tab or window rather than a modal. Regardless, Rene was quite clearly making a phpBB suggestion for this forum. Which, as you note, is somewhat off-topic for this thread. But I don't think that attempting to apply the off-topic discussion to the actual subject of this thread helps anything. It just makes this discussion ever more absurd. Because, pointing out that a suggestion that no one made makes no sense, well, makes no sense. You're essentially arguing with your own strawman. Certainly the gallery should not link off site. Has anyone so much as hinted that it should?
