Could pressing the search link auto-select the input?
Now you have to move the cursor into the field and click before you can type.

A small thing to improve I think:
When you have a lot of items in the basket (see screenshot), how to go to the basket, it's impossible.
Clicking on the basket in the navbar opens the list on the right but you don't have access to the buttons.

move the buttons to the top

I think that's the right solution. Even if scrollable, you would have people that won't figure that out.
It looks good in the bottom, but for UX, the top seems better.

Good idea Burt
And maybe the list of products is sorted in descending order, i.e. the last one added in the first line, the second to last one added in the second line and so on.
Or another solution: leave the buttons at the bottom and only display the last added article. I think it's the better way to have a nice offcanvas

I believe this fly out cart simply displays in the same way as the usual shopping_cart.php page.
If that is true it's beyond the scope of this function.
Instead it would mean a core change is added items to go newest at top.

On a computer it seems to be perfect. Thanks @burt and @heatherbell
The question I have now is: how does the scroll movement behave on a mobile phone (I don't have one so I can't test it). I'm afraid that by putting my finger on an article, it will redirect to the article page instead of scrolling.
