Might be a daft question but how can it work if it's invisible?

Do you mean the icon is just not showing?

Have you checked your source code for the element?

It was invisible to the eye. When I hover over it the mouse pointer turn into a hand.

I clicked on it and the Twitter box opened.

The last available download probably won't work on my 1.0.8.20 site. However, I did get the bird to appear but not the X.

After changing the code in the language file, user.css and the fontAwesome hook, it became obvious some deeper investigation would be needed.

Not at the moment. I did make some changes as mentioned but didn't work. So I reverted the changes and got the bird to appear.

How to change versions of FontAwesome?

Installed the module, seems to work ok, is there a sub module for Instagram?

Instagram doesn't allow it in the same (easy) way that others do, hence no Instagram sub module.

Probably be easyish to do some sort of halfway hybrid;
- show instagram icon
- they click, your link is in their clipboard
- they go to insta and paste it
