Trying to make Phoenix load quicker

Hi,

Just wondering is it worth enabling GZip Compression? Does it make a difference?
Is there anyway of compressing images?
Trying to make the site load quicker as mobile performance is slow.
If there are suggestions it would be appreciated.

Rainer's KISS IT add-on would probably be most helpful in reducing image file sizes. You may want to consider the paid version and/or hiring Rainer to make further optimizations.

Images are already compressed. Uncompressed images are called bitmaps and usually have an extension of .bmp. Your images are probably JPEGs, GIFs, or PNGs. JPEGs have a quality measure that you can turn down. This makes the image smaller (file size) but less detailed. You may not notice the lower detail. PNG/GIF are more like a compressed bitmap (GIF uses a similar algorithm to GZip). WebP has both a JPEG/lossy mode and a lossless/PNG/GIF mode and may be smaller for your images. Rainer's add-on uses multiple versions of the image, so the product listing uses only the small, thumbnail version.

For a dynamic site, turning GZIP on at the lowest setting helps download time slightly. Turning to higher settings generally eats up the bandwidth savings with more CPU usage. I suspect that this would be especially bad on mobile, as it comes with more limited CPU. But the best approach would be to try it both ways and see how it works. However, on most sites, images would be more of bandwidth than the HTML.

I'll look in to that, our biggest issue is the listing/stock management system we use. All our products and images are uploaded to that then sent to Phoenix without using the Phoenix admin, does it only work when images are uploaded through the admin?

That's the kind of thing that would be better asked in the add-on's support area (if you just want to use the free version) or by asking Rainer directly if you want quoted.

The add-on describes the admin support as optional, which suggests to me that it will create missing thumbnails on the fly. But Rainer would better know how it works. Depending on how your Phoenix/stock interface works, it may also be possible to add it there. If you have budget, it would be reasonable to ask Rainer to quote that.

KissIt Image creates/uses the Thumbnails on demand/on the fly where they are used. So it's independent how the images are uploaded. The only requirement is that the images are called with the core tep_image function.
