Download & Install

Backing up your website and database is not an essential step to setting up your shop but it is important to make a frequent and regular backup of both your website and database, certainly every time before you make any changes, so now is a good time to start the habit.

Back up the Website.

Create and save a folder/directory on your computer - name it, for example, yoursite.

Open it and create and save another folder/directory in it - name it, for example, yoursiteTodaysDate - maybe it's obvious but use the name of your website and the date you are making the backup :) - so e.g. example20200831

Select all files on the server and transfer/download to yoursiteTodaysDate folder/directory.

This is simply just the reverse of what you did to install Phoenix.

NOTE: Create a new yoursiteTodaysDate folder/directory every time a backup is made to keep regular snapshots of the website - the website can then be restored to any snapshot.

Back up the Database.

  • From admin go to Adminnavbartools.png Tools → Database Backup to open the Database Backup Manager page.
  • Click Backup to see this:

Toolsbackupmanager.png

  • No Compression (Pure SQL) is already selected - this can be left as is.
  • Download only (do not store server side) checkbox is unticked - leave unticked to save on the server - tick this box to save to the downloads folder on your computer - it is advisable to do both so a backup is stored on your local computer. It might also be advisable to move the download to your yoursite folder/directory so it can easily be found again!
  • Click Backup - the database SQL file will then show on the page when complete if it is saved on the server - it will be saved in the file path shown on the page.

If the database has been stored on the server, it can be restored from admin by going to Tools → Database Backup, click the file and then click Restore.

If the database has been downloaded and saved on your computer, it must be restored by accessing your database on your host server account and importing the file. Many host servers use phpMyAdmin as database software. Different software might be used on your server but they all work in a similar way - see phpMyAdmin

Some users might prefer to backup the database directly from the database software.

Keeping Records.

Making backups before any changes are made to your site also makes it advisable to keep records of any changes made in a Change Log file.

Keep it saved in your yoursite folder/directory.

This could simply be a text document though a spreadsheet document can be easier to read.
