This PI product_info addon saves "real estate" space on the product_info page. It will display EITHER the products short description or the first X words from the full description along with a "read more" link. The "read more" link pops up a Modal Window which shows the full description of your product.

This addon changes ZERO core code - simply upload and turn it on.
