Addon install question

I notice a few of the addons have a folder "catalog". If I do not use "catalog" would it go into the root of the website folder?

Generally yes. Of course, there is nothing enforcing that for add-ons that aren't part of Pro. But if something says "put it in the catalog folder" it would mean the root folder of the shop.
