Occasional slow site. Host unhelpful

I have been with my hosting provider since 2009. They were recently taken over and things have gone downhill. My site is 1.0.8.4 on PHP 7.4.33 and has been at that release for several months.

Occasionally my site is very very slow, taking well over a minute to load both admin and customer site, normally it is fast for a shared server.

On reporting it to be slow I get the same answer every time “It loads OK this end”

They finally tested it on a phone browser and agreed it was slow, but no fix.

After about an hour the problem disappears and returns to normal for a few weeks.

Any ideas or should I consider one of your recommended hosts.

This sounds like a resource issue to me. Some of the time your host's server is busy. Some of the time it is not. Although another alternative is that it is a networking issue. Sometimes hosts are buying network from the wrong people and end up constrained by the network.

You can get some idea of which by turning on the page parse time logs and looking at that. Or someone like Google Analytics may be able to give you more information. If the page parse times are low but the page is slow to load, then it may be network (or dependencies, like databases).

Whether network or server though, I don't have a good solution to fix it without help from the host. So yes, we'd encourage you to try one of the certified hosts who want your business.
