E-Commerce News

Post by Fiber »

I just read this this week. Does anyone in Germany already have this? Apparently, it's already been implemented there. Germany News

This was also announced in US but the regulation is currently stuck in the Appeals Court, I believe.

The legal focus there and in discussion in UK is subscriptions though, rather than physical orders.

ebay and amazon already have it, of course.

For physical orders it would be one click to request cancellation rather than cancel immediately since it may already have been despatched.
Since the right to return applies in most jurisdictions, it's in merchants' interests to make it as easy as possible to get a cancellation request processed before goods are sent out.

So what does this mean for shopowners in the EU ?
What is needed, in very simple terms and plain language.

Discuss, and come up with some ideas.

As I understand it, a customer places an order and, for whatever reason, wants to cancel it (within the 14-day cooling-off period here in the Netherlands), logs in, goes to his profile, clicks on View order, and there should be a button next to "view" cancel order. I know there's some things involved.

As far as I understand - and if I look at how Amazon caters Cancellation:

On account_history_info.php?order_id=1 Add a button "Cancel Items" (I would say "Cancel Order") - than have an extra Cancel Confirm Page (Where customer confirms cancelling "are you sure you want to cancel this order?") - if Yes - send confirmation to customer by mail.

And off course set a status for order "Cancelled by Customer" so admin can reimburse Payment (if allready paid/applicable).

And I believe the Cancel Button should only appear if order is not processed/shipped. In the case order is allready processed/shipped the normal Return Procedure would be applicable.

That's it!

PS - for me it feels I am posting too much  - but you need the feedback!

For Germany the final law will be published on 19th december 2025. There are laywer sites who are sure the button should be in footer ( e-recht.24 ) I used google translate for a sentence : " The cancellation button must be constantly and easily accessible. Ideally, place it clearly visible and highlighted in color in the footer of your website. Avoid implementing it exclusively in the customer login area. " Maybe it is a bit too early .......

Then how do you know which order to cancel?

The only place outside the customer login area where you could put such a link would be in the notification email(s).

@ecartz i did not think about technical solutions, i just was reffering to a laywer page, what EU law could want from us.
