Price Match to a Competitor Price, per customer - Worth Considering?

Post by burt »

Some shops let customers ask for a Price Match if they spot a cheaper price elsewhere.

Basis is shoppers like feeling they're getting a `special` deal so it might stop them wandering off to another site.
Even just the option to ask might make your shop feel more approachable? More trustworthy?

Of course, there are definitely pitfalls. You don’t want the system to be abused - constantly matching lower prices can hit your margins. But a small, carefully managed setup can turn a hesitant shopper into a happy customer, and that word-of-mouth might be more valuable than the discount given.

Anyone...please...welcome to get involved in discussion..ideas, thoughts, pitfalls.

I've sort of got a concept floating around in my head, but would be good to get some thoughts from you guys who might use such a system as there 100% will be things I have not thought about.

Ask for it:
Shopper contacts Shopowner to show them a link to the cheaper product.
Let's assume they added the particular product to their cart.

Contact Via
- a form ?
- live chat ?
- email ?

Get it applied:
If shopowner agrees, they set up a matched price for that Shopper only.

Contact back, Via
- if by form or email, would need to send email back saying "ok, login"
- if by live chat, send message saying "ok, refresh your cart"

That's the basis of where I'm going on this. Pitfalls?

Do not think you can assume the shopper has added the item to their cart.

and possibly not registered. or knows how to.

First, the other competing product link would have to be inspected. Most of my customers cannot tell the difference between 1 item and another. Also, there are elements like free or not-so-free shipping.

It does, however, open up an opportunity to converse, most of the time, that could sway a sale on its own.

as for making a sale with slightly less profit, as opposed to no sale, well no contest, just depends on how much energy has to be put in to make it happen. has to be easy, being able to forward a quite email, perhaps with correctly formed discount code, or a link with the code already in it (if that is possible) and time limited.

Regards

Yes, this is the way!

At the very least that price match request opens a conversation. That conversation might be where the sale is actually won. Maybe you explain the difference, maybe you justify the price, maybe you meet somewhere in the middle - either way, you've got a chance you didn’t have before.

Yes, But for me, think the link should be more in your face

You are basically saying, you will not find like-for-like cheaper

test us.

cosmetics I know

But the supermarkets spend a lot of money on advertising like this, so it must work for them, for me the Morrisons bottom right would fit my style website, I think, nice and bright. good colours, shape (ish) would also suit that column.

But realise this is the easy bit.

How to go about the next bit is harder, whether to incorporate it as a discount code, which I would think most people would already use, but all of a sudden its not standalone, and if it was used, the original backend does not lend itself easy to use to quickly supply a code.

or some other method that is currently unknown to me, about to show.

The concept I have in mind is to set up an "over ride" price for said product, limited to only that customer who requested.

Change the little grey rosette to some image.

Sounds kool,
caveats:
Might not be an existing customer
Might not be in Cart
could not be used for other items
could not be reused

Be nice if it were commented on invoice too

Have fun.
