Gary when you get to the point that you need some testing done, I'm available. I don't use the Attributes feature since it never seemed to be worth the effort and I simply add individual products for any of the available options (mostly product sizes)so I would be a complete newbie when looking at things. If that type of newbie testing is of any use to you, just let me know.

I use attributes for my DVD shop. The default option of DVD is pre selected as a default choice and there is a Blu-ray option in the drop down. However I have a large number of DVDs where there is no Blu-ray option so no attributes, the pre selected choice does not appear. Could this proposal cope with that?

The Magician (parent)
-> DVD (child)

The user would need to select the Child as shown here:
viewtopic.php?p=22735#p22735
The last image showing the selected (blue) variant.

At some point you might get stock of Magician on Blu-ray, just make a new Child, so you end up with;

The Magician (parent)
-> DVD (child)
-> Blu-ray (child)

From this point on, there would be two selectable children.

--

Alternatively, if just DVD and only ever just DVD...;

The Magician DVD (normal)
-> No Children

It's just a product, buyable in the usual way.

@burt : A quick question regarding the SKU (Model) for defining the parent and children.

Image
In the example shown, there is:
APP-1, which is the parent;
APP-1-BL, APP-1-RL, and APP-1-RS, which are the children.
Is it the beginning of the SKU (Model) APP-1 that links the children to the parent, or can it be any SKU (Model) such as:
SIG14001A as the parent;
HO.SIG14001A, N.SIG14001A, and TT.SIG14001A (where HO, N, and TT are reproduction scales)?

@bonbec - it could be any SKU.

However in this "dirty" code, the listing is simply ordered by SKU so that the Parent & Children all sit together.

If the SKU was as you suggest, that (parent/children together) would not happen, so it would need some careful thinking about to display nicely in the admin listing.

Okay, thank you.
So the safest option would be to have SIG14001A as the parent and SIG14001A-HO, SIG14001A-N, and SIG14001A-TT as the children.
Since I have resellers, it's going to be a bit complicated to change all my SKUs (models), not to mention all my printed manuals. My father used to say, "When there's a problem, there's a solution; you just have to find it."

TY to all who posted in this discussion.
I shelved this project for the time being, as it's not a system I myself have a need for.
Sorry if this feels a bit unfair, especially to those who posted in the thread.

May revisit in future when/if the next conversation about options/attributes happens.
At some point there surely will be businesses ready to help with funds to allow proper working time on this.
