I understand why you want the message in the db instead - it has it's advantages.
Language-file-editing have become less important, as the InfoPages takes care of some of the most important edits in texts, while a lot of the language-file controlled text is rather static.
Still, I would argue that learning to edit the language-files should be the norm.
However, for text that changes a lot, I too tend to use the db instead of files to make it easier to find and edit the text I want to edit.

I have never seen something like your image, so I'm afraid I don't know why it happens. How does it look in the database?
Were I you, I would try to find another core-example and use that as a template instead.
