Remove manufacturers?

Post by dodgyhuw »

Just setup my phoenix install. I don't need anything manufacturers. I make my own products and only need categories. Can I remove manufacturers somewhere? PayPal too?

If you mean the side box (as shown on the left on the demo https://phoenixcart.org/demo/), that can be uninstalled like any other module in your admin dashboard > Modules > Boxes
Make sure you have a good read in the User Guide on how to set up your shop - https://phoenixcart.org/phoenixcartwiki ... ET_UP_SHOP

I was simply wanting to make my phoenix install lean and agile by removing anything I do not need including their files and code. Phoenix is great but too bloated for my liking. I like to keep things lean and trim. Just my choice.

I like you. What things do you think we should remove from the core code ?
One of the main concepts in Phoenix is to have a lean core, but a core that allows easy extendibility - that concept was started back in 2016, but it's just recently we've seen that concept become more and more useful and more and more accepted (by both addon makers and by shopowners). Over the years it has been a little bit of a struggle to "force" that concept forward, due to some historical anchors we had (that no longer exist).

Anyway, my question is a genuine one. If you want to make a whole new post that would be great in terms of starting a conversation. Give Phoenix your ideas...

I believe that's an individual thing. What works for some does not for others, vice versa. Some like it hot, some like it cold. Just my opinion ... for myself. No pun intended.

It is, for sure, an individual thing. I'm just slightly amused (in a good way) that you are one of very few shopowners who think Phoenix is bloated - it's usually the inverse.

I'd like to remove more stuff from Phoenix...so if you wanted to elucidate, that would be helpful.

Just to give my input:
  • attributes (one or two add-ons would be needed to replace the functionality)
  • products expected
  • manufacturers (specifications can offer the same, only more flexible)
  • tools->database tables
  • tools->define languages (an add-on already exists. Also, though it offers the "download only" option, I think most just saves it, thus editing core-supplied files instead of using the override option in templates)
  • newsletter manager
There are also a few things in configuration that could go, but that may be for another time
